Based on the highly cycle-efficient StarCore™ SC3400e DSP core, the SP2700 family of media processors provides more than twice the processing capacity and consumes less power than competitive DSP architectures. The increased frequency of the SP2704S coupled with a cycle-efficient architecture allows for high-density media processing, reducing the number of line cards and lowering power consumption. All StarPro media and baseband processors are equipped with embedded CPUs and integrated high-density memory that eliminates the need for external memory in many applications.
"Wireless operators need powerful, highly scalable solutions to handle the exploding demand for broadband and real-time video services," said Will Strauss, principal analyst, Forward Concepts. "The StarPro SP2704S media processor enables networking and telecommunication OEMs to deploy high-capacity, media-rich, any-to-any wireless services across the network with minimum cost and risk."
As service providers move to a flatter, distributed network, the fully programmable StarPro SP2704S enables new revenue-generating services such as video conferencing and telepresence, premium subscription video streaming, video ad insertion, and digital signage by distributing cost-effective video processing power at the edge of the network.
“Mobile Internet video is driving a massive shift in end-user behavior that requires service providers to look at new ways to monetize the content flowing through their network,” said Steve Vandris, media processor product line director, Networking Components Division, LSI. “Along with a robust set of software solutions, the SP2704S enables service providers to offer a wide range of next-generation applications and reduce their total cost of network ownership by achieving high-density, optimal cost and power efficiency.”
All LSI® StarPro media processors feature low-power process technology and advanced packaging technology. They are shipped with a comprehensive software development environment and an industry-leading suite of proven DSP software including audio, data and video codecs that are compliant with SVC, H.264, H.263 and MPEG-4 protocols.
The LSI SP2704S and the sixteen core SP2716 media processors are immediately available to networking OEMs and will be showcased in hospitality suite AV64 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 14 to 17. The LSI stand is located midway along the Avenue near the crosswalk between the Courtyard and Hall 8 of the exhibition.
