1394 - The High-Speed Serial Interface for All the Right Reasons
It's all about bandwidth. Driven by rapid speed requirements of computers and the adoption of digital consumer electronics, users want to do more like video editing, sending pictures to friends and relatives, and downloading real-time video and audio. We need faster connections between our PCs, cameras, peripherals, and other consumer electronics that will make all this possible. That's what 1394 provides: high-speed, low-cost ports on computers, peripherals, and consumer electronics.
How fast is it? The current standard allows rates of 100, 200, 400, and 800 Mb/s, to be followed with versions to handle 1.6 and 3.2 Gb/s. Such speeds make 1394 capable of handling all the needs that most users will experience, today and well into the future. The complementary technology, Universal Serial Bus (USB), meets applications that have more moderate bandwidth requirements. Today, USB operates at 1.5, 12, and 480 Mb/s.

1394 Driver Support
Below is the information for customers looking for 1394 Open Host Controller (OHCI) drivers for their LSI 1394 OHCI devices (i.e., FW323).
The drivers are supplied by both Microsoft* and Apple† and are included in the standard release of the operating system (i.e., Windows* 98SE/ME/2000/XP and Mac OS †). 1394 PCI add-in cards which contain the LSI OHCI devices are plug and play. Simply install your 1394 PCI add-in card as per the board manufacturers instructions. The OS should detect its presence and load the appropriate drivers automatically.

LSI offers a complete family of 1394A PHY products for all current 1394A needs. Our products support both 1394a-2000 and 1394-1995 specifications with support for 100, 200, and 400 Mbits/s operation. Additionally, LSI offers 1394B products that operate at 800Mbits/s. All products have been extensively tested for 1394A compliance and for interoperability on a PHY-to-PHY, link-to-link, and link-to-PHY basis.
