Increased performance and lower power demands of next-generation communication networks present unique challenges to IT architects. On the one hand, there's the need to accommodate rapid shifts in traffic patterns and higher usage by consumers. On the other, there are mandates for efficiency – both in terms of energy consumption and capital expenses.

That's where the Axxia® Intelligent Services Adapter (ISA) can deliver real value. It provides inline and co-processor acceleration for standard x86 servers, enhancing the performance of a wide variety of applications used in enterprise, data center, and service provider networks, including real-time network monitoring, unified threat management, server load balancing, and application delivery controllers.

At the heart of every Axxia Network Accelerator ISA card is LSI’s advanced Axxia Communication Processor (ACP). The ACP delivers a combination of multicore CPU functionality, programmable packet processing, traffic management, content inspection, and secure encryption. Its scalable architecture helps maximize software reuse, which reduces development cycles and speeds time-to-market. What's more, the Axxia Communication Processor Virtual Pipelinetechnology provides a flexible framework that revolutionizes packet and information processing. You can assign individual packets to individual sequences of processing steps through the system, enabling the most efficient use of CPU, acceleration, and memory bandwidth.

The two different hardware configurations for the Axxia Network Accelerator ISA include:

  • Bump in the Wire mode – Fiber Bypass is enabled
  • High Performance mode – Fiber Bypass is disabled

In addition, the Fiber Bypass allows a bypass switch for Fail to Wire operations. This mode of operation improves system availability by bypassing the PowerPC® cores or data path cores in the event of core processor or data path issues.

Axxia ISA hardware features include: Intelligent Services Adapter

  • Built-in hardware accelerator engines, including classification, deep packet inspection, packet integrity check, timer, packet assembly, programmable scheduler/ buffer manager, stream editor engines, and quad core PowerPC
